Organic Farming Practices

OntarBio Organic Farmers' Co-operative has three distinct farming units that each contribute to the product mix sold under the Organic Meadow brand name. The units, called "pools" are the Dairy Pool, Egg Pool and Grain Pool. Refer to our Products page to see the wide variety of products sold by OntarBio/Organic Meadow.

Each pool has certification guidelines that must be followed if the products are to be sold as "certified organic". The following list is the basic guideline. If you require a more extensive list please refer to the Certification page to find telephone numbers and addresses for the certification companies our Co-op members are certified with.

The Grain Pool - Organic Grain Farming Practices:

  • Land is farmed without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides
  • Manure is composted before it is spread on the land
  • Producers develop an ecologically sustainable crop rotation
  • Producers maintain accurate and current records of machinery usage and cleaning, activity on rented land and storage
  • A minimum of a 25ft buffer is left between organic land and conventional crops
  • A buffer three times larger than the Canadian Seed Grower Association isolation distance is left between organic crops and crops that are genetically modified
  • Organic plants must grow from organically certified seed
  • Farms are certified organic by OCIA or OCPP
  •
The Dairy Pool - Organic Milk Farming Practices:
