Certification
OntarBio has three principal certification agencies - Organic Crop Producers & Processors (OCPP), Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) and
Quality Assurance International (QAI).
Basic Certification Requirements:
Land must be farmed without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides for three consecutive years to be certified organic
Manure must be composted before it is spread on the land
Producers must develop and implement an ecologically sustainable crop rotation
The producer must maintain accurate and current records of machinery usage and cleaning, rented land and storage
A minimum of a 25 ft buffer must exist between organic and conventional crops
Certified organic crops must be grown from certified seed varieties that are not genetically modified and are not treated
Organically certified seed will be required for the 2003 growing season and beyond
Producers are expected to provide the most comprehensive history available of all land to be certified
Animals must receive 100% organic ration
No use of antibiotics or synthetic hormones
Animals must have access to the outside throughout the year
